Background

My career has been in financial services, across regulatory, treasury and disclosure work. That work teaches you how money moves through an institution: how it is recorded, reconciled, reported and supervised.

Since 2021 I have also worked independently with blockchain projects: writing whitepapers, building tokenomics models, researching markets and preparing licensing documents for exchanges and fund managers. Token economies turned out to be financial systems too. They have supply schedules, obligations to early backers and treasuries to manage, and they fail for the same reasons weak balance sheets do.

Encume brings the two together. For everyday readers, it explains crypto in plain language with the risks stated. For founders, it applies the discipline of institutional finance to token design.

Two ledgers, one discipline

How ideas from banking map onto Web3. Select a row to read the note.

  • Both exist to keep one agreed record. One gets there through reconciliation, the other through consensus.

  • A cap table and an unlock schedule answer the same question: who owns what, and when they can sell it.

  • A token treasury is a funding plan. Emissions with no revenue behind them are slow dilution.

  • Public data is not the same as disclosure. Someone still has to explain what the numbers mean.

  • The obligations carry over almost unchanged. The tooling and the evidence change.

  • Immutability proves what happened. It says nothing about whether it should have.
